We have not tested any of this equipment. We do not own it, we have not lifted on it, and we are not going to write a review that pretends otherwise. There are no star ratings on this page and no scores, because both would be invented.

What we did instead: read the published specs off 31 verified adjustable dumbbells listings, then define a set of jobs a buyer actually needs done. Each pick below fills one job, and the line marked Why this one states the published fact that puts it there — a range, a rating, a dimension, an itemised parts list. Every one of those facts is checkable against the spec table on the card immediately below it.

Where a listing did not publish the spec a job depends on, that product is not eligible for the job. Silence is not a low score, it is missing data, and filling it in would be the exact thing we are trying not to do.

What we could not judge on

Almost no seller in this category publishes the increment size, and several do not publish a weight range at all. What to actually look at

01The increment decides how long the purchase lasts

Top weight gets shopped. Increment is what you live with. A pair that moves in 2.5 lb steps lets you add to a press every week or two; one that jumps 5 lb per hand asks for ten pounds across the pair in one go, and on an overhead press that is where people stall and stay stalled. This is also the spec sellers publish least often, which is why no pick above is justified on it. If a listing does state an increment, that is a genuine point in its favour.

02Selector, pin, or spinlock — decide this first

A dial or pin selector changes weight in seconds and is what makes supersets possible at home. A spinlock handle with loose plates is a fraction of the price and takes a minute per change. These are two different products wearing one category name, and picking between them narrows the field faster than any other decision. Every card states the mechanism its listing published.

03Sold single or sold as a pair

This category is full of listings that quote a weight and do not make clear whether you are buying one dumbbell or two. Ordering one when you meant two is the most common mistake here and it is entirely avoidable — the slot labels above say which is which for every pick, taken from what the listing itself states.

04Handle length, because the ends catch

A wide-range selector dumbbell is a long object. At the bottom of a chest press the ends can meet before your arms do, and on lateral raises the length changes the feel of the movement. Assembled dimensions are published on only a handful of these listings. Where they are, they are on the card, and it is worth measuring the gap between your hands at the bottom of your worst-case lift before ordering.

▶What are the best adjustable dumbbells?

There is no single answer and anyone giving you one has picked it for you rather than for your training. On published range, PowerBlock’s Pro 100 tops the dataset at 5 to 100 lb per hand. If you want that range to arrive as a pair in one order, the Elite USA 90 is the widest that does. If you want a path to expand later, the Elite EXP is the only pick whose listing states one. We have not tested any of them and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

▶How did you rank these without testing them?

We did not rank them. Each pick fills a named slot, and the reason it fills that slot is a spec its own listing published — a range, a material, a dimension — which you can check against the spec table on the card right there. Where a spec was not published, the product was not eligible for the slot that depends on it. That is the whole method, and it is on the page rather than hidden behind a scoring rubric we made up.

▶What weight range should I buy?

Buy for a year from now, because top weight is the one thing most systems will not let you change. Then check the bottom end: a system starting at 10 lb per hand leaves you nothing for rear delts, and you will end up buying a light fixed pair anyway. Ranges on the cards are per dumbbell unless the listing says otherwise.

▶Are adjustable dumbbells worth it compared to a fixed set?

It is a space question more than a money one. A fixed 5 to 50 lb set in 5 lb steps is ten pairs and a rack that takes a wall. One adjustable pair does the same range in the footprint of two cradles.
