Home gym equipment, by the numbers

Short answer

180 pieces of equipment across 8 categories, every spec copied from the listing or the manufacturer. No prices, no star ratings, no gear we pretend to have tested.

A rack, a bench and a loaded bar — the three things a home gym is actually made of. Everything below is measured against that.Original 3D render by BarWeight — an illustration of this class of equipment, not a photograph of a specific product.

8 categories

Pick the thing you are actually shopping for

Each page compares the same published specs across every model in that category, explains what those specs mean, and leads with the one measurement that decides the purchase. None of them ranks anything, because ranking would mean claiming a comparison we have not run.

If you want a shortlist instead

Our picks, and how we chose them

The category pages above rank nothing — they are spec references. These do pick, and every pick names the published spec that put it there. We have tested none of this equipment and there are no star ratings anywhere on this site.

The questions that come before the purchase

Build order

What to buy first, and what to buy last

There is a right order to this and almost nobody follows it. The expensive mistake is buying an all-in-one machine before you own a bar.

  1. 01

    A barbell

Nothing else in a home gym is useful without one. Two-inch sleeves, seven feet, 45 lb or 20 kg. Get this right and every plate you ever buy fits it.

    Barbells →

  2. 02

    Plates

Bore diameter has to match the bar. Buy pairs, and buy the small ones — a set with no 2.5s is a set you cannot add weight to.

    Weight plates →

  3. 03

    A rack

This is what lets you fail a squat alone. Ceiling height decides it before any other spec, and hole spacing decides whether the safeties land where you need them.

    Power racks →

  4. 04

    A bench

Pad height around 17 inches so your feet reach the floor. Check that an adjustable bench actually gets all the way flat before anything else.

    Benches →

  5. 05

    Then the additions

Dumbbells, a Smith machine, a cable stack. All of these are good. None of them replaces the four above, and buying them first is the mistake that costs the most.

    Adjustable dumbbells →

The starter kit the build order above describes

One verified model for each of the first three steps. These are not the whole field and they are not ranked — the category pages carry every model we have spec'd, and the guides linked under each card do the choosing.

Step one — the bar

Best for: A general-purpose 7 ft bar for a rack-and-plate home gym.

Skip if: You want a specific knurl or tensile rating — the listing does not publish those figures.

Check these yourself before ordering

  • — The actual bar weight, which the listing title does not state
  • — Shaft diameter and whether there is a centre knurl
  • — Loadable sleeve length against how many plates you own

Step two — the plates

Cast iron

Best for: Iron plates for a rack-and-bar gym where nothing gets dropped.

Skip if: You deadlift on a floor you care about. Iron is not a bumper.

Check these yourself before ordering

  • — Which weights the option you selected actually contains
  • — Whether they are sold singly or in pairs
  • — Plate thickness against your sleeve length — see the bar data on this site

Power Rack

Best for: Barbell work in the cage plus cable work off the same frame, without a second machine on the floor.

Skip if: You want a guided bar path. A rack holds the bar; it does not steer it.

Check these yourself before ordering

  • — Interior depth against your bench, and upright height against your ceiling
  • — Hole spacing through the pressing range — 2 in Westside spacing is not universal
  • — Whether the J-hooks, safeties and any pulley parts are included in the option you picked

How we compare this stuff

Published specs only

Every figure came off a manufacturer page or the retail listing, and each card carries the date it was read. Where a seller did not publish something, the card leaves it blank instead of estimating.

No prices, no ratings

Both go stale, and a stale number is a false claim. Amazon’s terms restrict displaying prices outside their approved tools anyway.

Nothing is ranked

We have not tested any of it, so there is no “best” here. What there is instead is the same specs side by side and an explanation of which ones decide the purchase.

Exact models, or no link

A buy link only exists where we opened that exact listing and read the specs off it. Near-enough models get a manufacturer spec sheet and no link at all.

Questions people actually ask

What should I buy first for a home gym?

A barbell, plates, a rack and a bench, in that order, and buy the rack before the bench if you train alone. Those four cover every main lift there is. Dumbbells, a Smith machine and a cable stack are all additions to that base rather than substitutes for it. The most common expensive mistake is buying an all-in-one machine first and then discovering you still need a bar.

Why are there no prices on this site?

Because a price we publish today is wrong tomorrow, and a wrong price is a false claim. Amazon’s own terms also restrict displaying prices outside their approved tools. Click through to see the current price on the listing itself, where it is by definition correct.

Have you tested any of this equipment?

No, and we will not claim otherwise. Every spec on these pages was copied from the manufacturer page or the retail listing, and the source is on each record with the date it was read. What we can tell you is what the numbers mean for your ceiling height, your sleeve length and your bar math — which is what the rest of this site is for.

Why do some products have no buy link?

Because we could not verify a listing for that exact model. Rogue Fitness, for example, does not sell through Amazon at all. Those records stay on the site as reference specs with a link to the manufacturer instead. We would rather show the right bar with no link than a near-enough bar with one.

Why is there no photo on some cards?

We only publish a product photo when we can point to written permission to use it, and it must be the exact model linked. For most of this equipment no such permission exists, so those cards carry a typographic spec panel instead. A photo of a similar-looking product would be worse than none.

How much floor space does a home gym need?

A rack, a bench and a loaded seven-foot bar is the constraint, and the bar is usually the one people forget — it is seven feet wide with plates on and needs room to be loaded from both sides. Measure your ceiling before your floor, because ceiling height is the one dimension you cannot work around. Every category page below leads with the measurement that decides that category.
