Fixed dumbbells have nothing to break and take one second to pick up. The cost is floor space: a full 5 to 50 lb set is twenty dumbbells and a rack.

How to choose fixed dumbbells

01Work out what the set actually contains

A "50 lb dumbbell set" can mean a pair of 25s, a single 50, or a range of pairs adding to 50. Listings in this category are inconsistent about it in a way that catches people out constantly. Every card below shows the set weight and contents exactly as the listing stated them, without us reinterpreting the number. If a listing is ambiguous, that ambiguity is visible on the card rather than smoothed over, and it is worth asking the seller before you order.

02Hex heads or round heads

Hex dumbbells do not roll away when you set them down, which is the entire argument and it is a good one on a sloped garage floor. They also sit flat for renegade rows and push-ups. Round heads look tidier on a rack and roll off a bench at the worst possible moment. Rubber-coated hex is the default in this category for a reason. The head shape is on each card where the listing publishes it.

03Rubber, urethane, or bare iron

Rubber coating protects your floor, quietens the set, and is the cheapest protective option. Urethane costs more, does not have the smell that new rubber has, and holds up better over years. Bare cast iron is the cheapest of all and will mark a floor and rust in a humid garage. The material is on each card as published. What none of these listings publish is how the coating is bonded, which is the thing that actually fails.

04The rack is half the purchase

Twenty dumbbells on the floor is a tripping hazard and a room you cannot use. Some sets include a rack, many do not, and a rack bought separately has to physically match the head shape and the number of pairs you own. Check what the listing says is included — it is on every card — and check the rack's stated capacity against the total weight of the set, because a rack rated for 300 lb under a 550 lb set is not a rack for long.

05Buy the range you use, not the range that looks complete

A full 5 to 50 lb set in 5 lb steps is ten pairs. Most home lifters use four or five of those pairs constantly and the rest almost never. Buying the pairs you actually press and row with, then filling in later, costs less and takes far less wall. The one exception is the light end — 5s and 10s get used for warm-ups and rear delts by everyone, and they are cheap.

Questions people actually ask

▶Fixed dumbbells or adjustable?

Fixed dumbbells are faster, simpler and have nothing to break, and if you have the space and the budget they are the better training tool. Adjustable dumbbells exist because most people do not have a wall to give up. If you are choosing on floor area rather than on preference, that is the honest way to frame it. Our adjustable dumbbell page covers the other side of the trade.

▶What weights should a beginner buy?

Pairs of 10, 15, 20 and 25 lb cover most pressing, rowing and accessory work for a long while, and add a pair of 5s for warm-ups and rear delts. That is five pairs rather than ten, costs roughly half, and takes half the wall. Add heavier pairs when the ones you own stop being hard.

▶Do rubber dumbbells smell?

New rubber coating has a strong smell that fades over weeks, and in a small closed room it is genuinely noticeable at first. Urethane does not have it. We have not handled any of these sets, so we are describing a known property of the materials rather than making a claim about any specific product below.

▶Can I use dumbbells instead of a barbell?

For pressing, rowing and everything accessory, yes, and the extra stabiliser demand is a real benefit. For heavy lower-body work the loading runs out — two 50s is 100 lb, which is a warm-up squat. Dumbbells also change the movement rather than just the implement, so the numbers do not transfer. If a barbell is the plan, start with our bar weight and plate math pages instead.
