Two numbers decide an adjustable dumbbell: the top weight and the increment. A pair that jumps 5 lb at a time will stall your presses long before it runs out of range.

How to choose adjustable dumbbells

01The increment is the spec that gets ignored

Everyone shops the top weight. The increment is what you actually live with. A dumbbell that adjusts in 2.5 lb steps lets you add weight to a press every week or two. One that jumps 5 lb at a time asks you to add ten pounds across the pair in one go, which on a shoulder press is a large relative jump and is where most people stall. Worse, several designs have a coarse increment at the bottom of the range and a finer one higher up, or the reverse. The increment published on each card is the one the listing states; where a listing states only a range, that is all we show.

02Selector dial, pin, or spinlock

Dial selectors change weight in a couple of seconds, which matters if you superset. Pin systems are similar in speed and usually simpler mechanically. Spinlock designs — a bare handle and loose plates you thread on — are the cheapest by a wide margin and the slowest by a wide margin, and they are genuinely fine if you are not changing weight mid-set. The mechanism is on every card. It is worth deciding which you want before you compare anything else, because it splits this category into two very different products.

03Handle length and knurl decide whether it fits your hand

A selector dumbbell has a fixed handle length, and on the wide-range models the whole unit gets long. That length is what makes some of them awkward at the bottom of a chest press or a lateral raise, because the ends catch. Where a listing publishes the handle length or the assembled dimensions, they are on the card. If the number is not published, measure the space between your hands at the bottom of your worst-case lift and treat an unpublished length as a risk rather than an assumption.

04Expandable, or fixed at what you bought

Some systems sell an expansion kit that raises the top weight later. That is the difference between a purchase that lasts two years and one that lasts ten. The catch is that expandability is a property of a specific product line, not of the category, and a kit that exists today may not exist when you want it. Where a listing states the system is expandable, the card says so. Buy the range you need now and treat expandability as a bonus rather than a plan.

05The cradle is part of the product

Selector dumbbells only change weight while seated in their cradle, so the cradle is not an accessory — it is how the thing works. Check whether it is included or sold separately, and check that you have floor space to keep both cradles where you actually train. A pair of adjustable dumbbells stored across the room from the bench turns a fifteen-second weight change into a walk, and that is exactly the friction they were bought to remove.

A threaded handle with collars. Slowest to change, simplest to fix, cheapest to buy.
Top weight
The heaviest setting per dumbbell — not per pair. Read listings carefully; some quote the pair.

Questions people actually ask

▶Are adjustable dumbbells worth it?

The arithmetic is about space, not price. A fixed set from 5 to 50 lb in 5 lb steps is twenty dumbbells and a rack that eats a wall. One adjustable pair covers the same range in the footprint of two cradles. If you have the room and the budget for the fixed set, fixed dumbbells are faster to grab and have far less to break. If you do not, this category exists precisely for you.

▶What weight range should I buy?

Buy for where you will be in a year, not where you are this week, because the top weight is the one thing you cannot change later on most systems. Then check the bottom end too: if a system starts at 10 lb per hand you have nothing light enough for rear delts or rotator cuff work, and you will end up buying a light fixed pair anyway. The published range on each card is the seller's stated figure per dumbbell unless the listing says otherwise.

▶Do adjustable dumbbells break?

They have moving parts, and dropping them is what kills them — the selector mechanism is not designed to take an impact with the plates half-engaged. That is the honest limitation of the category and it is why plenty of lifters keep a set of fixed dumbbells for the heavy work. We have not tested any of these, so we will not tell you which brand lasts longest. What we can tell you is that every listing here is compared on the specs it published, and durability is not one of them.

▶Can I use these instead of a barbell?

For pressing, rowing and most accessory work, yes. For heavy squats and deadlifts, the loading tops out fast — even a 90 lb pair is 180 lb total, which is a warm-up for a lot of lifters. Dumbbells also change the exercises themselves rather than just the implement. If a barbell is the plan, our plate math and bar weight pages are the place to start instead.
