Smith machine bar weight: why it is never 45 pounds

Short answer

A Smith machine bar is counterbalanced, so it does not weigh what a barbell weighs. Most makers never publish the figure. The only number you can trust is the one you measure on your own machine.

Why a Smith machine bar is not 45 lb

The 45 lb figure is real, and it belongs to something else. A men’s Olympic barbell is 20 kg by IWF rule, which is 44.09 lb, and the US sells it as a 45 lb bar. That number is fixed because a governing body fixed it. Every competition bar in the world has to meet it.

A Smith machine bar has nothing like that behind it. It is a component of one manufacturer’s machine, cut to that machine’s rails, and it is under no obligation to weigh anything in particular. Two Smith machines standing side by side in the same gym can have bars that differ by twenty pounds and neither is wrong.

Then the counterbalance takes whatever that raw number is and changes it again. So there are two separate unknowns stacked on top of each other: what the bar weighs, and how much of that weight is being cancelled out before it reaches your hands. Assuming 45 lb gets both of them wrong at once.

What the counterbalance actually does

Inside the frame, a weight or a spring is connected to the carriage and pulls upward. It is there so the empty bar lifts off its stops easily and does not crash down when you rack it. It is a usability feature and a safety one, and it is standard on the great majority of these machines.

The consequence is that what your hands feel is the bar’s mass minus the counterbalance force. If a bar physically weighs 30 lb and the counterbalance pulls with 20 lb of force, you are lifting about 10 lb. On some machines the effective empty-bar load is genuinely in single figures.

Manufacturers do not publish the counterbalance figure, and most do not publish the raw bar weight either. That is not a conspiracy, it is just not a spec anybody sells on. It does mean the number is unobtainable from a spec sheet, which is why the rest of this page is about measuring it.

Angled tracks change it again

Machines with an angled rail, usually around seven degrees, carry part of the load through the rails rather than through you, and the proportion shifts as the bar travels. Even a maker who wanted to publish one honest number would struggle, because there is not one number to publish — it varies through the rep.

How to weigh your Smith machine bar

A luggage scale or a hook scale costs very little and settles the question permanently for your machine. This measures what your hands feel — counterbalance included — which is the number your training log wants.

  1. 01Strip the bar completely. No plates, no clips, no collars, nothing hanging off the sleeves.
  2. 02Set the carriage so the bar sits on its stops at about chest height, where you can pull straight up on it without bending over.
  3. 03Hook the scale over the exact middle of the bar. Off-centre gives you a reading that is part bar and part rail friction.
  4. 04Pull straight up, slowly, until the bar floats clear of the stops. Hold it steady and read the scale.
  5. 05Repeat three times and take the middle reading. Write it on a piece of tape and stick it on the upright.

If the machine is in a commercial gym, ask a member of staff before hanging anything off the equipment. Most will not mind, and some machines have the figure in the manual behind the desk.

Bar weight is not among them. It is the single most searched question about this machine and it is the one spec the category has collectively decided not to answer.

We are not going to fill that gap with a table of invented numbers, and you should be suspicious of any page that does — a “Smith bar weight by brand” chart is very easy to write and almost impossible to source. Does the Smith machine weight actually matter?

For progress on the machine itself, barely. If you press the same Smith every week and the plates go up, you are getting stronger, and the unknown constant underneath cancels out of that comparison entirely.

For everything else, it matters a lot. Comparing a Smith press to your free-bar bench needs the real load on both sides. So does comparing your numbers to anyone else’s, or to a strength standard, or to a rep-max estimate. Feed a Smith press into a one-rep max calculator with 45 lb assumed for the bar and the estimate inherits the error.

There is a second, larger reason the numbers do not transfer even when you get the bar weight right: the fixed path removes the stabilising work entirely. A Smith press and a free-bar press are different lifts that happen to look alike. Track them separately, and use the measured bar weight so at least the arithmetic is honest.

Questions people actually ask

How much does a Smith machine bar weigh?

There is no single number, and anyone who gives you one has guessed. The bar runs on a counterbalance that subtracts an unpublished amount from what your hands feel, and the raw bar is often lighter than an Olympic bar to begin with. Commonly quoted figures run anywhere from about 6 lb to about 45 lb depending on the machine, which is a range wide enough to be useless for your logbook. The only reliable number is the one you measure on your own machine.

Is a Smith machine bar 45 lb like a barbell?

Almost never. A free Olympic barbell is 20 kg — 44.09 lb — by governing-body rule, which is why 45 lb is such a fixed idea. A Smith bar has no such rule behind it. It is a component of a specific machine, sized and counterbalanced by that machine's maker, and treating it as 45 lb will make every number in your training log wrong in the same direction.

How do I weigh my Smith machine bar?

It is a weight or spring inside the frame connected to the carriage, put there so the empty bar is easy to unrack and does not slam down. It pulls upward against the bar, so what you feel is the bar's mass minus the counterbalance force. Makers rarely publish the counterbalance figure, which is precisely why the bar weight is unknowable from a spec sheet.

Does the Smith bar weight matter for tracking my lifts?

It matters for the absolute number and not much for progress. If you always train the same machine, adding weight over time is real progress whether or not you know the bar. Where it matters is comparing a Smith press to a free-bar press, or to someone else's numbers, or to a strength standard — all three of those need the actual load, and all three are where the 45 lb assumption quietly ruins the comparison.

Do angled Smith machines change the effective weight?

Yes, a little. On a machine with an angled track, part of the load is carried by the rails rather than by you, and the effect changes through the range of the rep. It is another reason a single published number would be misleading even if makers published one. Weigh yours at the position you actually press from.
