How to load the bar for the barbell push press
Before the barbell push press is a rep, it is a number on the bar. Plates go on in pairs, one per sleeve, and the bar itself is part of the total — a 33 lb bar with a 45 on each side is 135 lb, not 90. This animation walks the three loads you will meet most often.

- Dipping too deep, which turns it into a front squat.
- Letting the torso pitch forward in the dip.
- Not finishing with the arms — the leg drive starts the bar, it does not lock it out.

Training convention: 3-5 sets of 2-6. Common as an overload tool for the strict press and as a power movement.

▶How deep should the dip be on a push press?
A few inches, with the torso staying vertical. Dip much deeper and you are doing a front squat with a press on the end of it, which is a slower and less powerful way to move the bar.
▶Can I push press more than I strict press?
Almost everyone can, because the legs contribute to starting the bar. That overload is exactly why the push press is commonly programmed alongside a strict press.
▶Should I reset between push press reps?
Lower the bar to the shoulders and reset your position before the next dip. Rebounding straight into the next rep turns a controlled lift into a bounce.
